European packaging manufacturer Coveris has introduced MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist, a lightweight paper-based packaging material developed for twist-wrapped confectionery products including candies, lollipops and chocolate pralines. The new structure is also designed for heat-sealable flowpack applications for bars and sticks.
According to the company, the material has been developed to comply with 95/5 paper recyclability guidelines, which require paper packaging to contain no more than five percent non-paper content to be considered recyclable within standard paper recycling streams. The development comes as confectionery manufacturers face increasing regulatory pressure linked to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes and packaging-related taxes across Europe.
MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist consists of a single layer of lightweight functional paper designed to provide sealing performance and product protection for confectionery packaging applications. Coveris stated that the structure can run on existing high-speed and standard form-fill-seal (FFS) packaging lines without requiring major machinery modifications.
The substrate also supports gravure, flexographic and digital printing processes, enabling its use across branded confectionery packaging formats. Coveris said the material is intended to offer an alternative to conventional multi-material packaging structures used in confectionery applications.
Melinda Bonamour, Business Development Manager Paper Consumer & Healthcare at Coveris, said the new material is intended to help confectionery brands reduce plastic content while maintaining packaging efficiency and product protection.
The launch forms part of the company’s wider MonoFlex Fibre range, which includes paper-based flexible packaging solutions for food, confectionery and consumer packaging applications.
